Today I present four more short sumbel toasts, one each to Thor, Tyr, Heimdall, and Freyja. Each toast is two stanzas of ljóðaháttr. The spellings have all been fully anglicized.
A Toast to Thor
Hail Thor,
thunder’s wielder,
Asgard’s chosen champion;
that bane of etins,
and best of warriors
is father to Modi and Magni.
He slew Hrungnir
and hammered Thrym
with peerless might and main.
For warding well
this world of Midgard,
Hail to thunderous Thor!
A Toast to Tyr
Hail Tyr,
the trothful god
who fettered fast the wolf!
For paying the shild
in applying that fetter,
as god of oaths he’s honored.
A patron of justice
and judgement by arms,
he sacrificed self for right.
For frith at things
and fairest deemings,
Hail to trusty Tyr!
A Toast to Heimdall
Hail Heimdall,
heaven’s warder,
the son of sisters nine.
With eyesight unmatched
and excellent hearing,
this guardian seldom sleeps.
For bringing back
the Brisingamen
and warding well the Bifrost,
Gullintanni
gains our praises.
Hail to watchful Heimdall!
A Toast to Freyja
Hail Freyja,
holy Vanadis,
the bearer of Brisingamen.
To the gods she came
as Gullveig the witch,
three times burned and bloodied.
But in Har’s hall,
as Heid reborn,
she joined the gods and goddesses,
wise in the witchcraft
we welcome as seith.
Hail to fairest Freyja!
